Polo Fields & Golf Courses on Point Dume in Malibu

Brian Merrick | December 7, 2021

Polo fields and a golf course on Point Dume? Yes that is right, the original plan for Point Dume or the Malibu Riviera as it is known called for a polo field and golf course. Additionally, there was a lighthouse, hotel, pier, and tennis facility. In 1939 the developers who sought to develop the Point Dume area had all these amenities planned for our little slice of the coast. The polo field was to be located in the area of Heathercliff Rd, Wandermere Rd, and today's Point Dume Club Mobile Home Park. It was designed to be 87 acres and have horse stables and paddocks for the horses. The polo fields never came to happen however prior to the Point Dume Club that area was used by the Point Dume horse community as a meeting place and impromptu riding area.

The golf course was sighted for the modern day location of Point Dume Elementary School and beyond. Designed to stretch from approximately Grayfox to Cliffside through Grasswood it was to be 138 acres of rolling fairways and ocean view putting greens. With parking for 200 cars and a tennis center. The golf course complex was to be the center piece of the Malibu Riviera. Other elements of this planned development were a hotel on 76 acres complete with a pier and breakwater at Little Dume beach and a lighthouse at the tip of the headlands. Average lot size for the home sites were approximately 2.5 acres and spread out on streets that do not match today's configuration of streets. Quite a grand plan in 1939 for the windswept peninsula way out in Malibu.
