The Tongva Native American tribe originally settled Topanga and the surrounding area. It has been suggested that the name Topanga means “a place above” from the indigenous tribe’s language. In the 1800s, a number of European-Americans moved to the area, developed the community and built Topanga homes. In the 1900s, Topanga became a place where stars of Hollywood lived while remaining close to the Los Angeles movie lots.
