Topanga is an eclectic community in the hills above Malibu where artisans and celebrities live the California lifestyle.
Welcome to Topanga
The Tongva Native American tribe originally settled Topanga and the surrounding area. It has been suggested that the name Topanga means “a place above” from the indigenous tribe’s language. In the 1800s, a number of European-Americans moved to the area, developed the community and built Topanga homes. In the 1900s, Topanga became a place where stars of Hollywood lived while remaining close to the Los Angeles movie lots. As the 20th Century wore on, the town began to grow as artists, Hollywood celebrities, musicians and others increasingly moved to the area. Topanga has become a community that is known for music and art and a number of international musicians have performed in Topanga including Burl Ives and Della Reese.
